Our approach

A test built to get it right, and honest about what it knows

Many people take an Enneagram test and never feel sure of the answer. We're building the most accurate test we can, and we'll show our work.

1

Motivation, not behavior

Two people can do the same thing for opposite reasons. Every statement asks about the why underneath: what you want, what you fear, where your attention goes.

2

Choices, not ratings

You see three statements and mark one “most like me” and one “least like me”. Forced choices are harder to answer by how you'd like to be seen than agree-or-disagree scales.

3

Matched for appeal

Statements in each set are matched to be about equally appealing, so you choose by fit, not by which sounds nicest.

4

Adaptive

After each answer, the test updates the probability of each type and asks the question that best separates your leading possibilities, especially lookalike types.

5

Honest about uncertainty

When two types are close, we tell you, and show you how to decide between them, instead of forcing one answer.

6

You confirm it

At the end you read unlabeled portraits and choose the one that fits. You are the final judge of your type.

What we claim, and what we don't

  • It's new and improving. The scoring currently uses carefully chosen starting assumptions. As people take the test and tell us whether their result fits, we'll calibrate it on real data.
  • No accuracy figures yet. We'll publish accuracy, type by type, once we've measured it against structured interviews with experienced typists. Until then we won't quote a number.
  • It's not a diagnosis. The Enneagram describes personality patterns. It says nothing about mental health, and stress or illness can make anyone look like another type.
  • The research is mixed. Independent studies give the Enneagram partial support. We test our own types, rather than assume them.

Your privacy

Today the test runs entirely in your browser; your answers aren't sent anywhere. When we add saving and research features, they'll be opt-in, with clear consent.

Where our content comes from

Our type descriptions are written in our own words, grounded in the major Enneagram books (Riso & Hudson, Beatrice Chestnut, Helen Palmer, Cron & Stabile, Rohr & Ebert) and teachers' podcasts, with sources recorded for every section. Where the authorities disagree, we say so. Scripture comes from the Berean Standard Bible. All faith content goes through theological review. Read our stance on the Enneagram and faith.
